What is a sealer?

We hear about them all the time, but many times we are not clear about what they are. Here we answer your doubts about sealants. What are they? Sealants are pasty materials with characteristics and advantages that, as their name indicates, serve to seal and insulate. Their main function is to prevent the passage of dust, water, noise, humidity, air and light. They have a series of characteristics that allow them to achieve this. Among them are impermeability, elasticity, performance and durability. Choosing the right product allows the greatest benefits to be obtained.

There are several types of sealants, each with particular properties. Among the most common are acetic sealants, polyurethane sealants, acrylic sealants and butyl sealants. Some acetic sealers prevent the formation of fungus and serve as fungicides. These are used in bathrooms and kitchens.

Polyurethane sealants, on the other hand, were created to seal both construction joints with severe movement and grouting. They are used in materials such as roofing sheet seals, aluminum, metal joints and seals in general.

Acrylic sealants are ideal for filling door and window perimeters and cracks. Many times, they can also be coated with waterproofing. Remember that these sealers can also be used on concrete or partition walls that will be painted later.

Finally, there are butyl sealants. These were formerly known as plastic sealers. Most of them cure, several adhere directly to any dry surface. The main advantages are to avoid corrosion between the materials where it is applied, to seal corners and aluminum intersections in prefabricated windows. They are also resistant to the passage of water, air and water vapor.
