Mexican architects duo that made a splash at the World Cup
There is no doubt that in Mexico there is plenty of talent that transcends internationally and that is why in this space of our blog we tell you about the architects Edgar Payán and Roberto Muñoz, who captured all their creativity, effort and dedication in two of the most impressive stadiums in Qatar: the Al Janoub and the Ahmad Bin Ali.
Edgar Payán
This architect studied at the Tecnológico de Monterrey, Monterrey campus and is part of the renowned firm Zaha Hadid Architects. He, along with his team, oversaw designing the façade of the Al Janoub Stadium. They were inspired by Qatari history and culture, as the country used to be a group of nomadic fishing villages and people were transported in boats called “Dhow”.

In addition to its maritime motifs, this venue has a high-tech cooling system that will ensure a protected environment for players and fans.
It is also important to note that this stadium is only a few minutes away from Doha International Airport, making it an ideal location for convenient transportation and proximity to different accommodations.
Roberto Muñoz
Originally from Guadalajara, Jalisco, he studied at the UDG and is the leader of the company Bio Lightweight Architecture. After gaining extensive experience in stadium construction and after attending a trade mission to Dubai, Roberto was chosen to build the roof of the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium.
One of the most striking features of this colossus is that it is located on the edge of the desert. This undoubtedly generated great challenges for the construction of the building. One of them was the care of the environment, so 90% of the rubble left by the previous stadium was used and the trees that surrounded the old stadium were also preserved in order to considerably reduce the damage to nature.

The stadium will be used for six group stage matches and one more in the round of 16.
Another interesting fact highlighted by the Mexican architect is that for the construction of the facade of the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, the material was brought from Europe, worked on in Mexico and then shipped to Qatar.
It is a fact that all the stadiums of this World Cup are innovative because they reflect the result of an impeccable organization, in which the objective was always to create sustainable buildings with first-class technology that will leave a legacy in the history of the World Cup.
